Fun Frames: SEE Eyewear Brand

September 5, 2019 By Kat

Glasses are part of your style too! The SEE eyewear store has fun and funky frames to choose from – including this glittery ombré pair.

  • See Eyewear

Couldn’t help but smile ear to ear when I tried them on.

They have all sorts of styles and colors, and they definitely add some personality to your outfit! They make limited quantities per color and per store, so you’ll likely be the only one in the office with those spectacular spectacles.

They also have store locations in the Bay Area if you want to try them on. I went to the downtown San Francisco location and the staff was very nice and knowledgeable.

If you’re not near a store, you can see their collection online for eyeglasses and even sunglasses!

The Moment of Inspiration

August 29, 2019 By Kat

I think we all have creative and spontaneous ideas that would be SO COOL if we just had the courage to go for them.

In recent years, I can recall very strong moments of inspiration where I felt called to create or write or draw or say something. The inspiration is so strong that it almost feels real. It feels within reaching distance. It feels within my abilities of that day, of that moment. It feels like THIS THING MUST HAPPEN. How could it not happen?? I must make it happen!

Life Happens

Despite this very strong urge or calling or nudge (which can last for hours or days sometimes), I end up getting distracted. There are things on my TODO list that are of higher importance or higher urgency. Something else is on fire. It must be taken care of first before I sit down to focus and go off into imagination land with my creative muscles.

So reluctantly, I take care of the tasks that need to be done to keep my life running, while in the back of my mind, I’d rather be working on my cool idea. Then life creeps in, the way it always does. Commitments come up. It’s time to sleep. It’s time to wake up. It’s time to cook a meal, but wait I need groceries first. Then I need to fill up on gas, and etc…

The energy and excitement of that idea just gradually dissipates. The idea doesn’t seem as urgent. The idea seems too fanciful. The idea seems like it can wait. The energy dies down to practically zero – where it becomes an idea shelved in the back of your mind as something you never got to because you were too “busy.”

Even if you did finally have a breather from all your tasks to clear some free time to work on your idea, you would probably get too antsy sitting down with a blank page. You’d find something else to distract yourself with – looking for a snack, cleaning up the house, laundry, etc…

These are all the ways we avoid working on our ideas.

Ideas Look for Human Bodies

From reading the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert (the acclaimed Eat, Pray, Love author), she talks about how these ideas float around from person to person looking for someone to carry it out in tangible form in the real world.

For example, she talked about a very specific book idea and storyline that came to her. She was going to write it out because it was so clear in her mind. For some reason, she didn’t have a chance to write it. Then over time, the idea became less and less important to her. After a while, she forgets about the idea. Then out of nowhere, another author pops up with this published book with the eerily SAME storyline.

By tracing back the timeline with this author, she realizes that the idea magically tried to come to her to be written, but when Elizabeth didn’t take action on it, the idea floated over to some other lady who did end up taking action on it. Hence, if you don’t act on the idea, the idea will probably get executed by someone else.

The Time to Act

That’s why it’s so important to act on that moment of inspiration – to just get up and start working on it. It’s a bad idea to sit there and start contemplating the pros and cons of whether you should take action or not. Overthinking the idea gives your ego room to discount the idea and rationalize why you shouldn’t act on it. So, no questions asked, go act on it and see what happens.

I wish I could say that I act on my ideas so perfectly every time, but of course, that’s not the case. But I wanted to write this article as a reminder to myself and all of you that those moments of inspiration are so important, yet so fleeting. So best to act when these magical moments descend upon you.

What an idea that’s been nagging at you?

A Beautiful and Versatile Wardrobe with The Reset

August 27, 2019 By Kat

I was wandering around the Valley Fair mall the other day, and my eyes did a double-take when I passed by the storefront of a new shop called The Reset. I hadn’t noticed it before, but the clothing in the window and the big signage about it being a woman-founded and Bay Area brand caught my eye. I went in to check it out.

Women Founded Brand The Reset

First of all, the clothing and displays and design of the place is beautiful – in a very elevated, clean, and chic way. The color schemes are very harmonious and soothing.

For some background, the brand The Reset was founded by Maria Peevey. Her concept of a “Reset” is a way to take the stress out of dressing by having a good foundation to your wardrobe with these timeless pieces.

They can easily be mixed and matched with the rest of your closet and for whatever occasion is at hand. Plus, when you have good foundation pieces, you don’t need a huge wardrobe. With less choices, it’s easier to get dressed in the morning. This is essentially the idea behind a capsule wardrobe. I love the ethos behind the brand and how they want customers to feel effortless and confident in their style.

The Reset casual basics

These outfits on display are so cute. Great for every day wear or when you want to look cute. Totally my style.

More great basics. I spy a leather jacket. 😉

Some t-shirts and tanks too

They also have some cute loafers on display! (I keep using the word cute because that’s how I feel about everything in the store!) These shoes were created by a different female founder, Ana Del Bosque of the Bosque footwear brand. She was also there in the store that day!

What’s neat about these leather shoes is that they can be worn TWO ways – as a loafer or as a slide (if you collapse the heel). See below, as demonstrated by Elecia Tyson. She is a fashion stylist working at the store and was telling me about the shoes. My mind was blown when I saw both ways.

Here’s another close-up of the shoes.

At the front of the store, there’s also these bracelets with an empowering message! Yes!

Here’s a look inside the dressing room too. Nice that they offer some heels to try on the clothes with.

You know what else I found out? It was their first day open at the mall! How cool! They originally have a store in SF and they’re opening up some new ones too. See locations here.

Alright, hope you enjoyed this post! If you like the styles pictured here, you can check out The Reset online. Get $25 off with my referral link!

Similarly, Ana’s shoe line Bosque is available online as well. Hooray for local female-owned brands!

Fearing Happiness

August 20, 2019 By Kat

What a triggering title. I’m almost afraid to write this post, which is why it must be written! Anyhow, this thought (of me fearing happiness) flashed across my mind the other day. I was thinking about how many great blessings I have in my life, yet how I feel a constant worry or anxiety beneath it all. Through some self-reflection, this is how I’ve come to explain it.

I think I somehow developed this habit or fear of getting too excited about something because I had this misconception that if I actually felt happiness, then it would soon be followed by a crash or something bad happening.

You know the quote, “what goes up must come down” and vice versa. I suppose this is a comforting thought when you’re down in the dumps because then you know it’ll only get better from there. But somehow my mind played tricks on me and got me to believe that if I accepted being on a high / being at the top of that curve / being happy, then I would be caught off guard and surprised by some tragic event.

And since I didn’t want anything terrible to happen, I never allowed myself to be happy for sustained periods of time and to finally relax into that happiness. I can only describe it as being hesitant to be happy.

Even recognizing this fear of happiness has helped me acknowledge and move past this unhealthy thought. When you can become conscious of what’s going on and can realize how silly a thought actually is, then you can rebuttal it.

And in this case, when I catch myself falling into this habit or coming up with unnecessary things to worry about or feel bad about, then I can respond to myself with: “No. That isn’t a problem. And it’s okay to be happy.” Usually this thought will be followed by a deep breath to relax into the feeling of “everything will be okay.”

It’s almost like giving yourself permission to be happy. And no one can give this to us except ourselves.

What do you think? Have you ever got stuck in this type of mentality before?

The Questions You Ask

August 2, 2019 By Kat

I’ve been fortunate to have some great coffee / phone chats with people of different backgrounds, age ranges, and industries.

From these conversations, I made an observation that I wanted to share with you for when you are networking with people.

Depending on your background experiences, you may sometimes feel intimidated by the other person. Perhaps they have many more years of experience than you, and you feel like you have nothing to offer them. But what I’ve realized that you can always add value to a conversation by the questions you ask.

I think a great conversation is fueled by great questions, positive energy, and connection. I would describe a great question as something that provokes the other person to think deeply or in a new way.

If the other person is currently struggling with a challenge in their life, maybe you don’t have the answer or expertise to advise them on a solution. But you can always prompt them with questions that help them get closer to the answer.

Asking good questions is a great way to form a bond with someone because you’re not preaching advice to them (which they probably don’t need to hear anyways). It’s encouraging them to self-reflect and come to a conclusion on their own. It’s more like looking at a problem together, instead of pretending to have all the answers for them or trying to fix a problem for them.

It’s a more empathetic way to build a relationship because it emphasizes listening carefully and responding in a supportive way.

What do you think?

My First Facial

August 1, 2019 By Kat

The best way to make your makeup look good (if you wear makeup), is to make sure your skin underneath is healthy and glowing and moisturized.

I admit that I haven’t taken the best care of my skin. Mostly it’s out of laziness. I don’t use those 10X mirrors up close every day. I usually just look into a big mirror over the sink, and think, “Psh, my skin is fine. I’m young!” Lol

But anyways, during a girls trip to Vegas last year, my friend Jean started talking about her elaborate Korean skincare process including facials and going to the Korean spas. Then I starting thinking, wow, I should really start taking better care of my skin and face. So immediately after I got back from my trip, I booked my first facial! Haha!

I did some Yelp searches and found Face-N-Body in downtown Mountain View. They offer services like facials, acne treatments, eyelash extensions, and more. I saw that they had great reviews, so I messaged them via Yelp for an appointment. The owner Sherin is very fast to respond and I immediately got an appointment!

Here is my “before” picture, before I got a facial.

Honestly, I was a little scared of getting a facial because I heard they can be quite painful when they’re popping your pimples. So that’s partially why I was never clamoring to go get a facial. But the reviews made it sound like a positive experience, so I decided to go for it!

Here’s Face-N-Body on Villa Street, a cross street of Castro Street in downtown Mountain View.

When you walk in, you’re greeted with a friendly face and then I got introduced to Yang, an esthetician who was going to do my facial. She’s very sweet and also has great skin (of course!).

She led me down a hall of rooms and showed me to my room. The room has a relaxing vibe to it. There was a robe thing that I could change into and some cozy slippers to wear too.

Once you’re changed, you can lay down on this bed facing up.

Then Yang comes back in and starts the facial! She turns on this humidifier-thing to open up your pores (that makes the extraction less painful). I don’t really know how to describe the whole facial process, but she does a bunch of things to make your skin nice and clean and moisturized.

She does extractions to clean your clogged pores – if you have pimples or anything like that. It can hurt if you have a bunch of acne. Well sometimes it hurts, and sometimes it doesn’t. I think the way they do it is less painful compared to other facial places though.

Near the end, she’ll apply a mask as well depending on what your face needs. Then clean it off, apply moisturizer and sunscreen. Here’s the sunscreen she used.

sunscreen

She’s very knowledgeable as well, and answered all of my skincare questions! I felt like I learned a lot from her. Where else are you supposed to learn about how to take care of your skin?

She also made these observations on my skin:
– She does see sun spots
– My skin is on the dry side
– But overall she says it’s pretty good for my age. (Score! Haha!)

Anyhow, the whole thing was nice! It wasn’t as painful as I thought and I realized I need to moisturize a lot more and protect my skin from the sun! Here’s my “after” photo.

  • Right after my facial, inside
  • Outside

I saw my fiance after my facial and he thought my skin was looking really good. So then he decides to setup an appointment with Yang to get his first facial too. Haha, random!

Since my first facial last year, I have been back to Face-N-Body a bunch more times. I got the deal where if you pre-pay for a bulk of 4 or 5 sessions, you get a discounted price. So I’m still working through that package!

If my face looks red, it’s because of the extractions. But then the redness goes away and for the next few days afterwards, your skin feels amazing!!

Anyways, if you’ve never tried a facial before, I recommend trying it out sometime!

If you’re in the Mountain View area, you could try Face-N-Body because they’re great. Their clients have a wide age range from teens to adults to older folks. They’re not just for women, men go too. People go there for their acne, or to maintain their skin, or to prepare for a special occasion like their wedding so they have glowing skin for the big day!

What a Toddler Taught Me About Business

July 26, 2019 By Kat

Owning my own business has taught me so many life lessons, and there can be a teachable moment within every encounter – a new client, collaborator, friend, family member, etc… Even when you least expect it.

This story happened a long time ago actually, last December. I was giving a Christmas gift to my nephew, who is a toddler. It was a dinosaur themed lego set – the Duplo ones with really big pieces for young kids.

Anyhow, he unwrapped the gift, and then opened the box to play with the legos. The lego pieces came in these sealed little plastic baggies. And he outstretched his little arm, held out the bag to me, said “Help pleez!”

At the time, he didn’t have a big vocabulary, but he knew how to ask for help. And that was the lesson I needed to learn.

Up until that point, I was trying to do everything in my business on my own. My own marketing – videos, social media, blog. Finding speaking opportunities and personal styling clients, doing sales calls, managing the administrative stuff and finances, while trying to juggle promotion for my book as well. There was just so much going on.

After that moment my nephew asked for help, his words kept ringing in my head. The words are so simple. Yet as adults, it is so hard for us to ask for help.

It wasn’t an overnight thing, but I started to ask more people for help. I started collaborating more. I was open to accepting help instead of being stubborn and trying to do it all on my own.

And probably the biggest step was to ask for support, in those tough times of my business, to say that I needed help.

Somehow, we’re conditioned to think we need to figure it all out on our own. But we don’t. We don’t even have to hold it together all the time. It’s a humbling realization, and it requires putting our egos aside. It’s okay that we need each other. And it’s okay to ask for help.

To my dear nephew, thank you for reminding me of this important lesson. And yes, I’d be happy to open that bag of legos for you.

Rocksbox: 3 Pieces of Jewelry Shipped to You Each Month

July 23, 2019 By Kat

Renting clothes is becoming more commonplace. It allows us to wear new clothes without having the expense and clutter associated with it. And now the same is being applied to jewelry – with a jewelry subscription service called Rocksbox! This is my honest review of the service.

rocksbox

When I had first heard about Rocksbox through someone’s Instagram stories, I was so intrigued! With Rocksbox, you pay a monthly $21 fee to receive 3 pieces of jewelry shipped to you in a box. You build a style profile and add “stars” to the items that you like, which give them an idea of what to send you. They ship you 3 pieces at a time, and when you’re done, you ship them back. Then a stylist selects your next three items.

You can purchase and keep the items if you like, or you can simply wear them until you’re ready to return it for a new box of jewelry.

Here are some snapshots from the experience as a first-time user. These are from their style quiz where they get to know what type of jewelry you have and what size you are.

Style Quiz on Rocksbox
Style Quiz on Rocksbox
Style Quiz on Rocksbox

They allow you to browse their entire collection of jewelry and encourage you to “star” your favorite items (to be added on your wish list) to earn an initial $5 credit.

I starred the bracelet with the snake head on it – Taylor Swift vibes!
Details on each jewelry piece

Each item has the price displayed if you want to buy it outright, but it would be free (aside from your monthly subscription fee) to rent.

Once you’ve starred a bunch of items, you wait to get styled!

Based on your wishlist, a stylist will select 3 items for you in your first box. They have emails to build up the anticipation too (see below). When your stylist has made a selection, they give you a sneak peek to see what those items are – in case you want to change them before the box ships to you.

Email from Rocksbox

These items were selected for my first box.

I didn’t really like the Ava Rose necklace they suggested, so I swapped it out for a different one. Certain items that I liked were not available for renting, (I guess someone else was renting them at the moment), so I settled on this Kate Spade necklace instead.

Then the box ships!

This reminds me of the Domino’s pizza tracker when you order for delivery, haha!

And then finally it arrived! I was so excited!!! It was wrapped so nicely too.

Ta da!
The little goodies

First item: a bracelet with a knotted detail on each end of it. It’s nice that it’s adjustable to fit my wrist, which is on the smaller size. I though it looked cool, but it looks a bit plain on its own, so I feel like it needed to be worn with multiple bracelets in a stack – which I didn’t have.

Second item: a ring. It looks cool on the website, but when you look up close, it’s actually some sparkly stuff on a black piece of rubber or something? I thought it was gemstone, but it looked weird / cheap in person unfortunately.

Third item: a Kate Space necklace. I chose it because I thought the pretzel shape was fun. But for some reason, when I tried it on, it wasn’t that exciting. It looked okay.

The note they included in the box was a nice touch – a personalized note from my stylist and a list of the items and pricing. You can use your $21 monthly credit towards your purchase, and if you buy all 3, you get a discount (similar to StitchFix clothing subscription, if you buy all 5 items).

Even though I could have gotten a discount on the items, plus my $5 credit from earlier, I wasn’t too enamored by any of the items, so I didn’t purchase any.

Also I kept the box for about 3-4 weeks and even then I didn’t wear any of the items.

So even though I was initially excited about Rocksbox and setting up my style profile, I felt meh about the service. The concept is cool, but I didn’t really like the jewelry pieces. I prefer picking and buying my own from other brands. They didn’t have the brands that I like to wear. And maybe this sounds weird, but I didn’t want to wear rented earrings because I have sensitive ears. So I could only have selected from the necklaces, bracelets, and rings. Oh and my ring size is pretty small too – 3.5 so most standard rings aren’t available in my size.

Anyways, it was several reasons layered together led me to my decision to ship back my box and cancel my subscription.

Too bad! I wanted to like the subscription box and have new jewelry every month, but it didn’t work out for me. Back to the old fashioned way of buying jewelry! 😉

If you want to try your luck at Rocksbox, check out this free trial link that I found online (not my referral code, haha):

How to Stop Binge Eating – An Interview with Eating Disorder Therapist Jared Levenson

July 17, 2019 By Kat

As a personal stylist, I work with clients who want to change how they dress and what their image is. Clothing is one part of it, but how they feel about their body is another aspect of it. Developing a healthy relationship with your body is no easy task!

That is why I’m excited to share this special interview of my friend Jared Levenson, who is an Eating Disorder Therapist in the Bay Area. For those who are struggling with weight loss or wanting to be more active or wanting to accept their body as-is, Jared has a fresh perspective on these challenging topics.

KK: Since your speciality is helping people to lose weight without any fad diets, what is your “secret” for how you help people achieve that?

JL: I help people first stop binge eating, and then after they have stopped binge eating to lose weight. So, my specialty is really focusing on compulsive eaters or people who might themselves be food addicts. My secret? Stop trying to lose weight! Seriously. It sounds weird, but you first have to stop compulsive eating behaviors first. Trying to lose weight or go on a diet before you’re ready emotionally is only going to hurt you. Yes, hurt you. There’s a painful side to diets and weight loss that many people don’t talk about, and I’m here to talk about it.

KK: I’ve heard you use the phrase “eating intuitively,” can you elaborate on what that is?

JL: Intuitive Eating is a beautiful healing journey. I’ve gone through it. Heck, I’m even certified in Intuitive Eating, a specialization on top of my Master’s Degree in Counseling. I got into Intuitive Eating because I used to binge eat all the time when I wrestled in high school. I even got anemia (where your blood doesn’t have enough iron and you have low energy all the time), and abused weed to manage my depression/anxiety. Then, I became a zen monk for 13 months and stumbled into intuitive eating principles. Long story short, my eating habits regulated and I fell in love with mindful eating.

However, Intuitive Eating is weight loss neutral. Intuitive Eating recognizes the tremendous harm done in terms of people trying to lose weight via dieting, and gaining all the weight back and ruining their metabolism in the process. To wrap up this answer, I say I help people to eat intuitively and go on a journey that results in weight loss.

KK: What are some of the root causes behind the behaviors of binge eating and stress eating?

JL: The root cause is deprivation, physical or emotional. This is one of the hardest concepts to grasp.

We first start with physical deprivation. Oftentimes people don’t realize that they are binge eating because they are secretly dieting! What do I mean by secretly dieting?

Oftentimes you try a diet and unconsciously pick up rules about food that you carry with you. For example, one woman I worked with started trying Weight Watchers in middle school. Even though she no longer followed Weight Watchers, she still would find herself evaluating foods by their points. This meant oftentimes she would neglect her hunger.

And if you neglect your hunger, guess what? You’re at risk for binge eating. So we first address hunger and the beliefs/obstacles preventing you from connecting to your body and getting satisfied.

After that work, we dive into meeting emotional needs. There’s no way around it. Stress eating is in large part caused by unmet emotional needs. So we start learning mindful eating skills and different ways to handle stress and learn how to handle intense feelings.

KK: One thing I love doing for my work is helping people embrace their body as-is, imperfections and all, by finding clothing that flatters them. What do you see your clients struggling with in terms of their body image?

JL: Body image is extremely tough, but so necessary to talk about. I think the best advice I got on this topic was from Linda Tucker, who said that we live in a culture of tremendous body shame.

We live in a culture where social media, magazines and so forth … all of these say our bodies are not good the way they are. So, given this culture, to expect that there will be moments of disconnection, where you hate the way you look and who you feel you are.

But given this expectation, given this built in struggle to love yourself, there is hope. In the pit of darkness, you can learn to love aspects of yourself and your body. And perhaps most healing of all, you can start to trace back and own your story. By this I mean, can you remember a time when weight wasn’t an issue? Perhaps this was back before you first started dieting.

You might have weight less back then too. What happened? Well, for many people, dieting happened. And dieting actually leads to WEIGHT GAIN! Long-term science has established this without a shadow of a doubt. Unfortunately, and this is the understatement of the year right now, because tremendous, awful shame results when you try to lose weight and fail.

So for years, many people believe they are flawed somehow. They carry this image of their body and who they are based on perceived failures. However, it’s not your fault.

It’s not your fault you couldn’t lose weight. You were in a paradigm that could never work. Dieting seems like it works in the short-run, but just doesn’t work long-term. So, I think the most healing thing for many people, is being able to start forgiving themselves for all the self-hatred they have directed their way over years of dieting and weight loss failures.

KK: Can you talk about your personal training background and how you got into eating management?

JL: Yes, I worked at a gym and hated it. I was told to get people on diets which went against the very fiber of my being. Fortunately, I was able to become self-employed and start a practice where I focused more on eating intuitively and emotional healing instead of high-pressure “magic” bullet diets.

KK: For someone who wants to get into shape, but has always had an inconsistent exercise schedule (like me!), what do you recommend?

JL: Hahaha, I hear you. For many people the word exercise has all these negative associations. Let’s examine them real quick. Exercise, you need to do a certain amount to have succeeded. Exercise, you need to burn off calories. Exercise, you need to work hard. Exercise, you are good at it or you suck at it. Exercise, needs to be hard. Exercise, you need to push yourself. Ok, you get it.

However, a new term ‘movement’ is often times used because of the different connotations. Movement is simply where you move your body – for fun. Not for weight loss. Not for calorie burning. Not because you should. Not because your doctor ordered you. But because you like it.

It’s fun to go on a walk. It doesn’t have to be a long walk. It doesn’t have to be high-stakes. Do it because it makes you feel good. Don’t have all these perfectionistic expectations on yourself.

Paradoxically, by really embracing a lighter standard for success (one where you feel good and make it easy on yourself) has much higher chances of changing long-term behavior than pretty much anything else.

KK: How do you personally stick to good habits in terms of eating and exercise?

JL: I’ll answer this one in an untraditional way, but it’s sooooooo important to understand this way of thinking. Let me break down the question a bit first of all, how do I ‘stick’ with good habits. Oftentimes this work ‘stick’ is used. It’s almost like I have to ‘stick’ with something because I don’t really like it. Like I don’t really like eating or exercising, but I am successful if I stick with something that I don’t like to do.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a little bit of that. But ALL healthy people who don’t have to force themselves to ‘stick’ to their health routines, they are seeing health as a skill or as an exploration. Perhaps the best analogy is actually seeing health as a game. A game that’s fun to play. So … I don’t stick with good habits … I have found ways to make it a game, or a skill that I’m mastering, or a journey that I’m going on. This way I am intrinsically motivated. And this is the key here, intrinsic motivation.

Intrinsic motivation starts with little success, and builds it’s way up. You’ve heard this before I’m sure. Just do a little bit each day. That’s true, but we really need to be careful. Just doing something each day isn’t enough. We need to feel that we can WIN. It’s this feeling that’s really important. We need to feel that we can IMPROVE. We need to feel that we can feel good, win and improve, etc … without killing ourselves in the process.

I also talk a lot about perfectionism. Because oftentimes people will beat the sh*t out of themselves, without even knowing it, when they fall short. This is the worst thing possible. You might have just gotten a little win, but then your too-high-standards made this experience a miserable thing for you. So you literally shot yourself in the foot with your perfectionistic judgments about your work, your worth and your progress.

So to really embrace a mentality of play, exploration, and learning without judgment. One where you can experiment, test, and try things out. An attitude where you can make mistakes, be lazy sometimes and be motivated by genuine pleasure and self-interest. This is the most important thing.

KK: You mentioned that you lived as a zen monk for 13 months. Wow! How was it and what did you learn from that experience?

Oh, it was awesome! I lived at Tassajara up in the Big Sur mountain range. Because I had the experience there of healing my body, it’s always stuck with me. Like this whole eat intuitively thing, this whole thing … it’s about realizing you have it within you. But realizing this in a practical way. It’s one thing to believe and hear, you have it within you. But how do you live it? Well, one way is mindfulness. Another way is self-compassion. I started learning these things up there. And … I started trusting my body … See, I was away from all electronics. No phone, no internet, nothing. I was fairly desperate and filled with enough self-hatred to do something crazy like this. So … if I wasn’t so unhappy I probably wouldn’t have become a monk in the first place. However, after doing it, I now see it was an incredibly, incredibly beneficial experience. To have so much time to heal, to have so much time to reflect and meditate and just be totally surrounded by healthy positive thinking people in nature for months on end … Yeah, it was awesome.

KK: Awesome! What is one tip that all of us can follow to become more healthy?

JL: You need to sleep more. Yes, there are folks that only need 5 hours. You’re not one of them. Stop fooling yourself. Seriously, stop. I tried for years getting by on 6.5-7. Now I am no longer in denial. I know full well ahead of time that I need 8 hours. I need it. No more pretending that I can get by on less than that. Coming out of sleep denial for me has been huge.

It’s really that I was in denial for so many years about sleep. I’d always think I didn’t need it. I’m not saying I always get 8 hours or that I don’t struggle. I do struggle with going to bed on time. Fortunately I sleep through the night but going to bed is tough.

But by being honest with myself, I have the mindset where I am doing the right things generally speaking – like winding down, giving myself time to relax, and going through a night time ritual. This tip is so important! Do not neglect it! The rest becomes WAY easier if you just get good sleep! Less cravings, way better decision making, more energy, etc. And without, the rest just doesn’t work as well. So embrace the zzzzzz.

KK: Where can people find out more about you and your services?

JL: Eating Enlightenment is my website. I’m also creating tons of content, which you can find by searching for Weight Loss Enlightenment on your podcast provider or on Youtube. Thanks for the interview!

Birdies: Cute and Comfortable Flats

July 16, 2019 By Kat

I love my black pointy-toe flats from Rothy’s and wear them all the time, but now I have some new flats that I’m so stoked about!

These are from the brand Birdies, which makes stylish flats for women, but they’re also slippers! They have flats, slides, and sandals in plain colors but also fun patterns and designs. It’s recognizable by the satin champagne quilting on the interior of the shoe and the cushion feel to it.

The Heron

Earlier this month, I stopped by their physical store in San Francisco with my friend Jodie. She already has a pair for work and loves them!

The store is so cute inside! And they had a sale going on too! (Tempting..)

Cute wall art too!

Here are what some of their other shoe styles look like:

The Starling in Cheetah
The Starling in more neutral colors
The Phoebe in Floral Jacquard. It’s got an Asian-inspired look to them.

Birdes can be worn for casual wear or for getting a little dressed up or for work! Here are some styles I’d recommend for work:

  • The Starling in Black, Cheetah print, or neutral colors (Latte, Slate, Ice)
  • The Heron in Black

Here are some styles I’d recommend for playtime in the summer:

  • The Sparrow in Sangria, Azure, Silver Shadow, or Jet
  • The Raven
  • The Songbird

They have a bridal section as well – with fringes, tassels, and jewels galore! *Swoon*

I wasn’t even planning on getting anything, but then I fell in love with these two pairs below LoL!

The Raven in Fuchsia (already sold out unfortunately!)
The Songbird in Gold

So that’s what I came home with! Plus this free hat they threw in, haha!

I’ve already worn my pink ones and they’re so fun to wear! Seeing a bright pop of color when I look down at my feet makes me happy!

If you want to check out their collection of flats, you can use my referral link for $20 off your first purchase. The sale is still going on now with limited selection left. Enjoy!
